![]() This “hands-on” experience is a curricular introduction to Pennsylvania history. ![]() In addition to public school classes, it can sometimes accommodate limited classes from private schools and home school programs. The Federal School Program has been in existence since 1991. Many dress in costume, adding to the charm of the experience. They delight in hearing about the apple for the teacher, the hickory stick and the dunce cap. ![]() The children have fun trying to adhere to the rules for behavior once common in one-room school houses, while learning the history of the Federal School itself and education in general. ![]() They sew their own copy books, do ciphering (arithmetic) on slates, read from McGuffy’s Readers, participate in a spelling bee, and practice memorization and recitation.ĭuring recess they play with typical mid-nineteenth century toys, such as hoop and stick, “graces” catch game, jacks, wood puzzles, jump ropes and tops. It is the strong bonds formed when families create traditions and celebrate their kinship that help them navigate the challenges, burdens, and grief that confront all of us at some point.Īs we look forward to the last few weeks of the summer, let us commit to finding ways to enjoy the summer days with our family, knowing how important these experiences are to promoting the emotional well-being of the family unit.During the day students enjoy the challenge of learning to write with nib pens and ink. Our connections with each other are strengthened during those moments, and the carefree days of summer provide many such moments if we are intentional in looking for them. The memories of these many summers are cherished by everyone in our family and are often the topic of conversation when we gather as a group.Īs I reflect on these memories, it reminds me of the need for families to make time to talk, laugh, and play together. ![]() The summer traditionally afforded time for our family to enjoy an unstructured togetherness that involved many board games and card games, dinners that lasted for more than five minutes, and vacations with cousins. The activities that I associate with the summer are different than the activities of any other season. Though the summer is still busy for many of us, there is hopefully time in these months for relaxing at the beach, the mountains, or at home with our families. ![]()
